Working Offline in Katapult Pro Mobile

How offline management stores your work, syncs it when you reconnect, and keeps your data safe in the field.

Katapult Pro Mobile is built to keep you working whether or not you have a signal. Every change you make is saved to your device first, then pushed to the database the moment you have a connection. This article explains how to stage jobs for offline use, what happens while you are disconnected, and how your changes sync back when you return to service.

How it works

Katapult Pro Mobile always saves your work locally on your device first. When you have service, those changes are pushed straight to the database. When you do not, they wait safely on your phone until you reconnect. You do not lose work by going offline, and you do not have to do anything special to save it.

When to use offline management

Offline management is for field work in areas where service is unreliable or absent. The typical case: you know you are heading somewhere without signal, so you stage the jobs you need before you leave. Once a job is staged, it stays available on your device and your edits are held until you are back online.

Staging a job for offline use

There are two ways to add a job to your offline list. Both put the job into the Offline Management view, where you can see everything staged on your device.

Automatically, by working a job

Any time you switch to a job that job is added to your offline list automatically. A short confirmation message appears to let you know it was added. For most fielders, simply opening and working the job is all it takes to stage them.

Manually, from the Offline Management view

You can also open the Offline Management view and select jobs to add them directly, without having to switch into each one first. This is handy when you want to stage several jobs ahead of a route.

What happens when you go offline

When you lose service, Katapult Pro Mobile takes a moment to confirm the change, then shows an offline indicator (sync symbol at the top of the page). Give it a few seconds to appear. Tapping the indicator opens the Offline Management menu, where the status will show that the app is trying to reconnect to the server.

Working while offline

You keep working exactly as you normally would. Take photos, mark attributes, complete your collection. As you make edits, the Offline Management menu tracks them for you:

You can move between staged jobs while offline. Double-tap a job in the Offline Management list to open it, and switch back and forth as needed.

Refreshing the app while offline does not erase your work. Because every change is stored on your device first, your queued edits stay put through a refresh. Your work is safe until it has a chance to sync.

Syncing when you reconnect

As soon as you are back online, Katapult Pro Mobile begins pushing your queued changes to the database, and a progress bar appears while it uploads. Your map imagery and data return at the same time. It can take a moment for the app to recognize that service has returned, and behavior differs slightly between iOS and Android. You should not have to do anything, but if the upload does not start after a short wait, a refresh will prompt it.

When two people edit the same job

If more than one person edits the same job offline and their changes conflict, Katapult Pro resolves it by the order the changes reach the database. Whichever edit is pushed last is the value that sticks. For example, if you set an attribute to false and a teammate sets the same attribute to true, the database keeps whichever one uploaded last.

Avoid having two people work the same job offline at the same time. Splitting jobs between crew members prevents conflicting edits and keeps your data clean.

Errors and protecting your data

Occasionally an error may appear as a bar in the app, sometimes prompting you to contact support. The Offline Management options give you a few ways to protect your data and get help, depending on whether you are online.

Option When to use it Availability
Send data to support Sends your data straight to the Katapult support team to review. Also reach out to support directly so they know it is coming. Online only
Save data to device Saves your data to your phone so support can review it later. Use this when you are offline and cannot send it yet, then send it once you are back online. Works offline
Clear Data Clears the queued changes that are causing an error. Only do this when support advises it, since cleared changes cannot be recovered. With support

The saved data file is for the support team to work from. It is not something you can restore yourself from the app. If you hit an error, the safest path is to save or send your data and contact support so they can walk you through what to do next.
